NEIGHBOURS told this week of hearing screams on the night a young woman was knifed to death in a block of flats.
Police launched a murder investigation after the death of 25-year-old Elidona Demiraj at Jessop Court, close to City Road basin, on Sunday night.
Officers gave first aid until the arrival of London Ambulance Service. An air ambulance also attended but the victim, who suffered stab wounds to the throat, was pronounced dead at the scene.
It is understood that Ms Demiraj, an Albanian national, had been living in the flat for only a couple of months, and had not been in the UK for much longer.
Tracey Baxter and Darren Hills, both 50, who live next door, said they had invited Ms Demiraj and a man into their flat the day before her death, and offered them coffee as they were locked out.
Ms Baxter said: “[On Sunday night] about 10.30pm we heard screaming and some things being thrown and the next minute – silence. We are in shock.”
Esther Ravenor, 48, who lives on the top floor of the block, laid flowers at the main entrance at midday on Monday. “I didn’t know the victim, and not enough people speak to each other here,” she said. “But if something happened to me, I would want this. I can’t believe it.”
• Arben Rexha, 31, of Jessop Court, appeared at Highbury Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday morning charged with murder. He was remanded in custody and will appear at the Old Bailey on April 21.
