CENTRAL London coach Joe Flaherty has joined the “cue” of fans calling for more women to take to the pool table after seeing his four-strong squad break an unwanted run at the weekend.

England international Michaela McEvoy, Lauren Sullivan, Ursula Zalewska and Jane Whaley teamed up in Scarborough to take part in the English Blackball Pool Federation National Championships.

They more than held their own as they won five of their seven group ties and made it all the way to the semi-finals before narrowly losing 5-3 to Cheshire in a topsy-turvy eight-frame contest.

Despite just missing out on a place in the final, manager Joe was delighted with the display, as it ended a four-year run without a win for the ladies county team. It also sets them up nicely for their last game of the season against Cambridge in January.

“The performances the players put in throughout the tournament showed what they are capable of, especially when their confidence grew,” he said.

“Now we need to start strengthening the squad by adding one or two more quality players. I would urge any ladies who think they have what it takes to compete against some of the best players from across the country to get in touch so we can arrange a trial at the Hurricane Room in King’s Cross.”

• Any players interested in taking up the challenge of playing for the Central London County team should call Joe on 07949 151235 for more details.
