Whittington Hospital doctor faces female genital mutilation charge

Published: 17 April, 2014

A WHITTINGTON Hospital doctor appeared in court on Tuesday charged with carrying out female genital mutilation – the first time anyone has faced prosecution in the UK over the practice.

Dr Dhanuson Dharmasena, 31, appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court with Hasan Mohammed, 40, from Holloway, a non-medical professional. Both were bailed to appear at Southwark Crown Court on May 2.

Mr Mohammed is charged with encouraging the doctor to repair pre-existing FGM on a female patient at Whittington Hospital after she gave birth there.

The alleged offences under 2003 legislation making FGM illegal are said to have happened in November 2012. Both have been released on unconditional bail.

FGM involves procedures that alter or injure female genital organs for non-medical reasons.
