Hospital at risk of privatisation under this new set-up

Published: 18 November, 2011

• DEFEND the Whittington Hospital Coalition is very concerned about the current attacks and cuts in our health service.

That’s why we are mounting two campaigns.

Whittington Hospital, or Whittington Health as it has now rebranded itself, is consulting about becoming a foundation trust.

This would mean it would be cut off from the NHS and the cost and care benefits that it provides (in the same way as academies isolate schools).

It places the hospital at risk of privatisation, where profits will come before health needs.

We urge readers to oppose this plan on the current consultation documentation.

Also, cutbacks in mental health are appalling.

Beds, wards, hospitals and staffing have been cut in an area of high mental health need and poverty.

There are further proposals to cut community care, and to demote and cut mental health staff.

We are holding a public meeting – Don’t Mess With Our Mental Health – at 7.30pm on Tuesday at Archway Methodist Hall, with MP Jeremy Corbyn, mental health users, workers and carers. We hope local people will come along and have their say too.
